Manchester United\u2019s attempt to recruit Thomas Tuchel has been closed off after he signed a new contract with England, a move the Football Association said was not driven by interest from Old Trafford.<\/p>\n
When Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS arrived at Old Trafford in early 2024 they moved quickly to assert control. The future of then-manager Erik ten Hag was placed under intense scrutiny during an end-of-season review that examined whether Ten Hag should be removed. That process included discussions with a large number of potential replacements.<\/p>\n
Tuchel was among those who held talks with United, but reports indicated he was unimpressed by the hierarchy structure during a period when the club was still finding its feet. United pursued alternatives again after their decision to retain Ten Hag on a new contract proved problematic for the club, but Tuchel instead accepted the offer to lead England.<\/p>\n
With Tuchel\u2019s previous deal set to expire in the summer, there was speculation United might reopen discussions with the former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain manager. According to ESPN, England officials feared losing Tuchel after the World Cup, when a number of elite clubs could have entered the market, and moved promptly to secure his long-term commitment.<\/p>\n
Mark Bullingham, the FA chief executive, rejected suggestions United\u2019s interest prompted the FA\u2019s action. He said: \u201cThe conversation evolved very naturally after we qualified,\u201d and added: \u201cFrom our point of view, it\u2019s just a really natural evolution. We felt like he was really enjoying the job.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s really enjoyed going to work in international football. The time it allows you between each game to plan, I think he\u2019s really enjoyed that, and just bought into the challenge of that.\u201d<\/p>\n
