Michael Carrick\u2019s Manchester United left the London Stadium with a point, but the 1\u20131 draw exposed recurring tactical problems the manager must address. West Ham\u2019s organised, narrow defensive shape limited what United have achieved by combining quickly through the middle.<\/p>\n
First, United\u2019s central combinations were neutralised. Carrick has persisted with the same four-man attacking setup since Patrick Dorgu suffered a hamstring injury at Arsenal. That focus on progressing and combining centrally has worked against many opponents, but Nuno Esp\u00edrito Santo\u2019s 4-5-1 prevented the visitors from finding joy between the lines. Bruno Fernandes was forced wider and deeper, the absence of consistent runners in behind left a gap between defence and midfield, and with no clear focal point crossing became an ineffective option.<\/p>\n
Second, the side lacked genuine width on the left. Carrick has coped without a nominal left winger since Dorgu\u2019s injury, with Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha sharing the role. Neither prefers to hold the touchline, placing added responsibility on Luke Shaw to provide an outlet. Shaw was \u201ca model of consistency\u201d this season, but his limitations in the final third were apparent. He was culpable for the passage that led to Sou\u010dek\u2019s opener, completed just one of four crosses, and did not offer the burst to create reliable width consistently. Historically used as a centre back rather than a wing back for Amorim, his athletic decline through injury means Carrick cannot expect him to resume the marauding role of his younger years.<\/p>\n
Third, United showed vulnerability out of possession. Diligence and energy have been the hallmarks of Carrick\u2019s interim spell, and those traits helped frustrate Manchester City and Arsenal. Yet against West Ham the visitors were sometimes exposed when the opposition sought to turn the ball over high. Nuno\u2019s side do not typically build from the back, but they identified a weakness and pressed to exploit it; United often looked well placed to be punished, but were spared by moments when the visitors lacked sustained intensity.<\/p>\n
Benjamin \u0160e\u0161ko\u2019s late introduction altered the balance. Mbeumo moved wide right, cut inside and delivered the ball where \u0160e\u0161ko beat Axel Disasi and finished with one touch to rescue a point. The young striker has now rescued results at the death on two occasions since Carrick returned, and four of his six Premier League goals have come in the last five games.
