Wayne Rooney warned that Tottenham Hotspur face a genuine relegation battle after their defeat to Manchester United on Saturday. Rooney pointed to recent results elsewhere to underline the danger. \u201cWest Ham have been in form, Nottingham Forest pick up results here and there. You can\u2019t think that they\u2019re not in a relegation battle where they are. I think they\u2019ll definitely be looking over their shoulders.\u201d<\/p>\n
The suggestion that some clubs are simply too big to fall has persisted, and the article notes past close calls for large clubs. Chelsea flirted with the drop zone in 2015\u201316 and Manchester United were in danger last season. Tottenham sit among that group yet their current trajectory is troubling because this decline is not presented as a one-off.<\/p>\n
Tottenham finished 17th last year under Ange Postecoglou. While the team prioritised success in the Europa League at the end of that campaign, they were still a bottom-half side at this point of the previous campaign. After 25 games last season under Postecoglou, Spurs had 30 points, one more than they currently boast under Thomas Frank.<\/p>\n
The comparison with last season is stark. There was a 13-point gap to the relegation zone at this stage of last year, more than twice the cushion they have now. On paper the squad should have the quality to move clear, yet victories have been hard to come by. The calendar year 2025 yielded only 11 Premier League wins for Tottenham; among teams that spent the whole year in the top flight, only Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham managed fewer, with eight each.<\/p>\n
Tottenham are still waiting for their first win of 2026, and the coming fixtures do not ease the pressure.<\/p>\n
