Arne Slot has placed the aesthetic of his team\u2019s play at the centre of his managerial priorities, saying that producing \u201cthe nicest football to watch\u201d is a prize in itself even as results remain the decisive measure for supporters.<\/p>\n
Speaking on The Reds Roundtable, an official club podcast, Slot accepted that his view may jar with a fanbase unsettled by the team\u2019s sharp decline off the back of last season\u2019s Premier League title. \u201cAs a manager, you can win the league, Champions League, the FA Cup or the League Cup but the biggest thing you can win is that you can play the nicest football to watch,\u201d he said during The Reds Roundtable , an official club podcast.<\/p>\n
Slot went on to acknowledge the tension between long-term ideals and short-term expectations. \u201cAlthough, at this moment in time, fans might argue a little bit. It is absolutely something that I am aiming for,\u201d the Dutchman said. He described his footballing aims in direct terms: \u201cI always want to have the ball, I want it to be intense and want the fans to like what they see. Not all of our fans see it as a joy to watch and the hardest thing is I even understand, I agree with them. Trophies is one thing but being a team, club or a manager that stands for good football, is in the long-term worth more.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sporting director Richard Hughes and FSG chief executive Billy Hogan joined Slot on the recording. Hughes offered a clear vote of confidence in the recruitment strategy and the patience the club expects from its supporters while the squad adjusts. \u201cAs long as the players are the right ones in the first place, and we are absolutely convinced every time we bring someone in that they are, then the performances on the pitch will quickly follow,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Hughes added that the club intends to allow the current group time to settle. \u201cYou want to be there to support them and not suffocate them with it, let them find their own feet.\u201d<\/p>\n
