Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero used social media to level a sharp public critique at his club\u2019s hierarchy over the shortfall of available players for the first-team squad.<\/p>\n
Romero, who was sidelined for Sunday\u2019s 2\u20132 draw with Manchester City, posted on Instagram addressing supporters and the club. “At times like this, it should be other people coming out to speak, but they don\u2019t\u2014as has been happening for several years now,” he wrote on Instagram. “They only show up when things are going well, to tell a few lies.” The post was subsequently edited to remove the last five words. There has been no sign of remorse on this occasion.<\/p>\n
He continued by praising his teammates and underlining the problem of numbers. “Great effort from all my teammates yesterday, they were incredible,” he wrote. “I wanted to be available to help them even though I wasn\u2019t feeling well, especially since we only had 11 players available\u2014unbelievable but true and disgraceful.<\/p>\n
“We\u2019ll keep showing up and taking responsibility to turn this around, working hard and staying together. All that\u2019s left is to thank all of you for being there and for always supporting us, the fans.”<\/p>\n
Romero\u2019s message arrived within an hour of the transfer window closing. Spurs completed only one senior addition at the deadline, the signing of Scottish teenage James Wilson to play for the U21s, and did not make any other last-minute first-team deals.<\/p>\n
The defender\u2019s reference to restricted personnel echoes warnings from Thomas Frank, who said he was without 14 senior outfield players for the Champions League trip against Eintracht Frankfurt last week. Spurs still won that tie and climbed to fourth in the final league phase table, but domestic form has been inconsistent. The draw with Manchester City leaves the club 14th, 11 points off the top five and nine above the relegation zone.<\/p>\n
January recruitment included Conor Gallagher and Brazilian left back Souza for a combined \u20ac55 million (\u00a347.4 million, $65 million). A proposed move for Andy Robertson fell through.
