End-to-end matches, frequent long-range strikes and robust defending produced a spectacle that suited a distinctive set of talents.<\/p>\n
This piece reassesses 20 of those players whose impact and quality shaped the decade. Gary Pallister, often underrated, left Manchester United in 1998 as the club\u2019s most decorated player of his period, having won nine major trophies in nine seasons. Sir Alex Ferguson said of him: \u201cHe is a defensive Goliath, has electric pace and can pass the ball. What more can you ask from a centre half?\u201d That mixture of pace and passing made him a linchpin for United.<\/p>\n
Goalkeepers defined matches too. David Seaman delivered dependable, match-defining saves across more than a decade for Arsenal, his 2003 recovery to deny Sheffield United a goal remaining an unforgettable moment despite coming after the decade in question.<\/p>\n
Wingers and creators were abundant. Steve McManaman personified Liverpool\u2019s style under Graeme Souness and was frequently compared to Ryan Giggs for his influence and ability. Ryan Giggs himself spent 24 years at Manchester United, making 963 appearances, scoring 168 goals and providing a league-record 162 assists.<\/p>\n
Several forwards owned headlines with goals and stories: Andy Cole ranks fifth on the all-time list with 187 goals; Les Ferdinand rose from non-league to finish with 149 Premier League goals; Ian Wright\u2019s late professional start did not stop him becoming indispensable.<\/p>\n
Other figures combined leadership and longevity. Tony Adams served Arsenal for 19 years, winning 13 trophies and earning a statue outside the Emirates. Peter Schmeichel redefined goalkeeping, scoring 10 career goals and earning praise as \u201cthis big blond Viking flying at you.\u201d Roy Keane\u2019s relentless professionalism helped Manchester United claim seven league titles.<\/p>\n
