Matheus Cunha\u2019s match-winning strike at the Emirates delivered Manchester United consecutive victories under Michael Carrick and halted Arsenal\u2019s long home run. The goal left United firmly in the fight for Champions League places, but Cunha\u2019s celebrations have put him at risk of retrospective action by the English Football Association.<\/p>\n
After scoring the decisive goal, Cunha ran to the section of travelling United supporters, performed a surfing-like dance and then approached the camera, shouting the phrase, \u201cThe f—— biggest,\u201d which was audible on Sky Sports. The broadcast prompted commentator Peter Drury to immediately apologise for the language.<\/p>\n
The FA\u2019s laws describe \u201cusing offensive, insulting or abusive language\u201d as an offence that can be punished by a sending off, and since 2013 the FA may take retrospective action based on incidents captured on camera and widely broadcast. There is no confirmation yet on whether Cunha will face formal sanction.<\/p>\n
United\u2019s squad and supporters have celebrated the goal, and Cunha later posted on Instagram with the caption, \u201cThe freaking biggest.\u201d The social post drew attention from former United attacker Jesse Lingard, whose comment under the post was a surfing emoji referencing Cunha\u2019s dance.<\/p>\n
The piece also recalled past precedent. In 2011 Wayne Rooney received a two-match suspension after swearing directly into a camera following a hat-trick against West Ham. Rooney consequently missed the 2011 FA Cup semifinal, which United lost 1\u20130 against Man City.<\/p>\n
Prior to Cunha\u2019s late heroics, United had not won at the Emirates in the Premier League since 2017, the year Jesse Lingard scored twice in a 3\u20131 victory.
