Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior has called Axel Disasi back into first-team training while making clear that Raheem Sterling is on a different path. Disasi featured in Tuesday\u2019s open session ahead of the club\u2019s Champions League meeting with David Luiz’s Pafos, a sign Rosenior hopes will help the defender regain match readiness.<\/p>\n
Rosenior said: \u201cI had a really good meeting with him a couple of days ago.<\/p>\n
\u201cI said to the players when I came in that it\u2019s a clean slate for everybody, so it was only right for me to chat with him. He\u2019s behind in terms of his fitness, his match fitness, and we\u2019ll work with him.\u201d<\/p>\n
Disasi has not been included in Chelsea\u2019s Champions League squad for the league phase and would need to be registered again to feature in domestic competition. The France international does not currently have a profile on the club\u2019s official website.<\/p>\n
The defender\u2019s return to training marks a reversal of sorts from the earlier stance under the previous coach, who rejected suggestions that Disasi and Sterling had been treated harshly. When asked in September about the situation, Maresca responded: \u201cMy father is 75 years old and for 50 years he has been a fisherman, working from 2 o\u2019clock in the morning until 10 o\u2019clock in the morning,\u201d he snapped back in September. \u201cThis is hard in life, not a player, the way they work.\u201d<\/p>\n
Rosenior, whose father Leroy was a notable footballer and manager, has taken a different approach since replacing Maresca. The manager stressed that the two players are being handled individually.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re in conversations with Raheem at the moment about different things going on in his career,\u201d Rosenior explained. \u201cHopefully that will be clearer in the next couple of days.\u201d At 31 and with four Premier League titles already in his trophy cabinet, Sterling is believed to be prioritising a permanent move to Fulham after neglecting interest from West Ham United at the start of the January window.
