Liverpool decided against entering the January race to sign Marc Gu\u00e9hi after determining Manchester City\u2019s acquisition did not represent good value, a report has revealed.<\/p>\n
The club had been expected to challenge for Gu\u00e9hi\u2019s signature at the end of the season, when his contract with Crystal Palace was due to expire and most of Europe\u2019s elite would be involved in the pursuit. That window of opportunity closed when an injury crisis in defence prompted Manchester City to act immediately.<\/p>\n
According to The Athletic, it was the cost of the deal that persuaded Liverpool not to make a move this month. While the initial fee was reported as \u00a320 million, the true cost of securing Gu\u00e9hi is said to be substantially higher. There is no mention of the exact total, but signing-on payments and agent fees are cited as factors that push City\u2019s outlay well above the headline fee.<\/p>\n
Gu\u00e9hi\u2019s wages are also believed to be in excess of \u00a3300,000 per week. That level of remuneration, combined with the player being due to be available on a free transfer in six months, left Liverpool unconvinced the transaction represented sound value for money.<\/p>\n
The club were not looking to do business in January even before it became clear Gu\u00e9hi would move. Those in charge still have no plans to enter the market unless another opportunity arises.<\/p>\n
