Michael Carrick has dismissed criticism from Roy Keane and other former professionals as largely unimportant to his brief as Manchester United caretaker. Asked about the commentary, Carrick described outside commentary as \u201ctotally irrelevant.\u201d<\/p>\n
Gary Neville, speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, summed up a common view: \u201cThere cannot be any consideration that Michael takes the job beyond this season.\u201d Keane, meanwhile, revived a long-standing grievance by returning to an exchange that involved Carrick\u2019s wife.<\/p>\n
During Neville\u2019s assessment, Keane interjected: \u201cHis wife can always come in because she\u2019s got a bit of a big mouth sometimes. She\u2019s probably doing the team talk.\u201d The remark echoed a row dating back to a 2014 Champions League defeat to Olympiacos, when Keane criticised Carrick\u2019s post-match interview with: \u201cThat interview was just like the performance: flat,\u201d and added, \u201cHe should say a bit more, have a bit more urgency even in his interview.\u201d Lisa Carrick responded on Twitter after the game with: \u201cRoy Keane what a —-, says anything to provoke a reaction.\u201d That post was later replaced by: \u201cDeleted my tweet… Emotions got the better of me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Carrick, typically restrained in public, appeared untroubled by the resurfaced hostility. \u201cIt didn\u2019t bother me,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019re not putting more pressure on me,\u201d he added. \u201cThere are plenty of opinions around, some positive, some not too much. It\u2019s totally irrelevant in terms of what I focus on.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s a lot that can be said, it\u2019s the way of the world. I\u2019m not going to pay too much attention to that.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor me, the players and staff, we focus on how we\u2019re going to succeed.\u201d<\/p>\n
Keane\u2019s complaints extended beyond the Carricks. He questioned the composition of the interim coaching group, asking: \u201cWhat has Jonny Evans done to be a coach at Man Utd first team?\u201d Evans had served as a loan player manager for five months before leaving his post in December. He had been on holiday with Carrick and Wayne Rooney in Barbados over the festive period and left early to support Darren Fletcher during Fletcher\u2019s two-game spell after Ruben Amorim\u2019s sacking.
