Manchester United will have Darren Fletcher in charge for the Premier League trip to Burnley on Wednesday, but the club are understood to be pursuing a different interim coach to oversee the remainder of the 2025\/26 domestic programme before appointing a permanent manager ahead of 2026\u201327. Crystal Palace\u2019s Oliver Glasner is described in reports as the top target.<\/p>\n
It is not expected that Fletcher\u2019s temporary spell will be extended long beyond Turf Moor. The Times first reported that United plan to appoint a stop-gap interim for the remaining domestic fixtures while they work on a long-term succession plan. BBC Sport supported those claims and added that Fletcher is not under consideration for that temporary role. He may still be required to oversee Sunday\u2019s FA Cup third round tie against Brighton & Hove Albion depending on how quickly the club move.<\/p>\n
United have used an interim appointment before. Ralf Rangnick was brought in as early as December 2021 after the disastrous end to Ole Gunnar Solskj\u00e6r\u2019s tenure and lasted 29 games across all competitions. Rangnick\u2019s spell produced the worst Premier League points-per-game ratio of any previous United boss until Amorim came along.<\/p>\n
In the scramble for a short-term solution, names with existing club links have been mentioned. Michael Carrick has been put forward as an obvious candidate; a fellow former midfielder, Carrick had a three-game stint as caretaker at the end of 2021. The former Middlesbrough boss is currently unattached and could lay claim to the permanent job should he do well. Sir Gareth Southgate is also noted as available following the end of his England tenure and is said to have strong ties to the INEOS board.<\/p>\n
Reports suggest Glasner is an appealing summer option because he is out of contract with Palace in June and is being mentioned as the club\u2019s top target. Bournemouth\u2019s Andoni Iraola and Marseille\u2019s Roberto De Zerbi have also been linked. De Zerbi was considered a candidate in summer 2024 but chose Marseille; in one of his first team talks he is said to have shown players the offer United made and declared: “This is the contract they offered me, a contract of several seasons, with the salary you imagine,” and “This is where I haven\u2019t been, because I put my passion before money. I came to Marseille for passion.”<\/p>\n
Other names recycled in discussions include Marco Silva, Kieran McKenna and Eddie Howe, plus international managers tied up with the summer World Cup: Julian Nagelsmann (Germany), Mauricio Pochettino (USMNT) and Thomas Tuchel (England).
