Ruben Amorim confirmed Mason Mount \u201cfelt something\u201d during the first half of Manchester United\u2019s 1\u20130 win over Newcastle on Friday and the midfielder was withdrawn as a precaution. The manager sought to temper concern while United assess another fitness issue in a thin squad.<\/p>\n
Mount, 26, has missed 52 games across all competitions for United so far, a run of absences that has heightened attention whenever he is forced off. \u201cHe felt something at half-time,\u201d Amorim confirmed to Sky Sports. \u201cHe wanted to go [for the second half], and that is also a good thing. He wanted to go in the second half, but we cannot lose more players.\u201d<\/p>\n
Midfield options are already stretched after recent setbacks. United have lost both Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo to injuries in the last week, and the shortage was such that the Fletcher twins, Jack and Tyler, were called up from the academy for the match. Jack Fletcher replaced Mount from the bench.<\/p>\n
The substitution represented another unwelcome interruption to a campaign in which Mount has struggled for consistent availability since his move to Old Trafford, a contrast with the relative durability he enjoyed during his time at Chelsea. Just hours before the Newcastle game, Sky Sports released an interview in which Mount said he felt he was close to returning to form after a difficult period.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think I\u2019m getting close to really getting back to [my best],\u201d Mount said. \u201cI think now with all my experience that I\u2019ve got and experiences that I\u2019ve been through, I think it can be higher than before.<\/p>\n
\u201cOver the last couple of years, it\u2019s been difficult to get even close to that level. But now, I\u2019ve had a really good pre-season and a lot of games. A lot of minutes in the legs. I feel like I\u2019m getting close to being back.\u201d<\/p>\n
