Manchester United have identified Conor Gallagher as a midfield option they could pursue in January after indications from Atl\u00e9tico Madrid that a permanent sale might be considered. A previous loan enquiry was not enough to interest Atl\u00e9tico, who have made clear they had, and still have, no intention of sanctioning a temporary deal. Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has claimed via his YouTube channel that the offer of a permanent deal next month could get a different response.<\/p>\n
Gallagher moved to Madrid from boyhood club Chelsea in August 2024 in a deal reported to have cost Atl\u00e9tico in the region of \u00a334 million ($45.3 million). Romano suggests that proposing a \u00a326 million fee could tempt Diego Simeone\u2019s side to sell. The England international has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter at Atl\u00e9tico. While he has made 46 La Liga appearances from a possible 53 to date, he has come off the bench in more than half of those matches (24). This season, it has been just three La Liga starts so far.<\/p>\n
Gallagher\u2019s background includes 95 first-team appearances for Chelsea across two seasons, and he regularly captained the Blues across 2024\u201325. Those credentials explain United\u2019s interest, even as the club is expected to prioritise next summer\u2019s transfer window over January, a window traditionally seen as lacking value. Still, clubs at every level are attracted by opportunism, and executives may see a deal for Gallagher as one that suits their needs.<\/p>\n
If United prefer to wait, they could return to the summer market and consider any of the seven other midfielders most heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford. Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton are among the more talked-about names, though Nottingham Forest, Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace are thought to be asking \u00a3100 million or more for their shiniest jewels.
