West Ham United has confirmed the death of Billy Bonds, the club\u2019s longest-serving captain, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 79. A figure who served the club as player, coach and manager, Bonds\u2019s impact on West Ham stretched from the pitch to the stands and beyond.<\/p>\n
He marked his first campaign wearing the armband with triumph in the FA Cup and remains the only captain in West Ham\u2019s 130-year history to lift that trophy twice. His leadership reached a peak in 1980 when he inspired the Hammers to a historic upset in the Wembley showpiece against Arsenal while they were a second-tier side.<\/p>\n
A stand at West Ham\u2019s London Stadium carries his name, and supporters immortalised him with the chant: “6’2″, eyes of blue, Billy Bonds is after you!” The sight of his long legs bounding towards the ball unnerved opponents and added to the reputation of a grizzled midfielder who, by his own admission, specialised in “sorting things out with a few tasty tackles.”<\/p>\n
\u201cTackling is an art,\u201d Bonds once explained in a rare interview with the Evening Standard back in 2019. \u201cYou don\u2019t get the contact that you did back then. You used to take a lot of hits and dish it out as well. That was accepted.\u201d<\/p>\n
The former captain is survived by his daughters Claire and Katie, and granddaughters Eloise and Elissa. The family issued a statement on his passing: \u201cWe are heartbroken to announce that we lost our beloved Dad today.
