Ruben Amorim delivered a stark assessment of Manchester United after Monday night\u2019s home defeat to 10-player Everton at Old Trafford. United dominated possession but were unable to convert control into a required response, with only six of their 25 shots forcing Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford into a save.<\/p>\n
The result, United\u2019s fourth defeat of the season, leaves the club 10th in the table. A victory would have moved them into the Premier League\u2019s top five, two points shy of Chelsea in second place.<\/p>\n
Amorim was blunt in his post-match comments. \u201cWe are not there, not even near the point that we should be to fight for the best positions,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have a lot to do. We have to be perfect to win games, we were not perfect today.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added context on expectation: “When we see the results of the weekend, we should get onto the pitch with a different excitement. Old Trafford was there saying ‘we are all here for a big step up’. And we were not ready.” He reiterated the gap he sees between current displays and where the club must be: “These five weeks, everyone is praising our evolution. But I’m always saying the same things: we are nowhere near the moment we are meant to be in this club.”<\/p>\n
Former United player and pundit Gary Neville was equally critical, describing the display as unacceptable. \u201cIt was nowhere near good enough,\u201d Neville said. \u201cThat was a really bad night for Man Utd, it was an embarrassment at times.\u201d He dismissed injuries as an excuse: \u201cForget [the injuries to Cunha and \u0160e\u0161ko], there are no excuses. I’m not entertaining that one bit. Everton dominated them with 11 men and with 10 men, in a different way of domination, but they dominated them through their fight and their spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n
Neville also pointed to complacency and the impact on confidence and trust in the squad and manager. He noted the fans’ reaction at full time: \u201cThe fans booed collectively at the end. It was loud, and rightly so.\u201d<\/p>\n
