Jamie Carragher has called on Liverpool to return to the transfer market in January and sign a central defender after a difficult start to the season. The Reds spent a record Premier League sum last summer but have been underwhelming, losing seven of their last ten outings in all competitions. The club’s defence has been singled out as a major factor in that run.<\/p>\n
Carragher made his position clear on Sky Sports: \u201cLiverpool need to spend in January, they need to buy a centre back, they should have bought a centre back in the summer,\u201d Carragher told Sky Sports. \u201cThey didn\u2019t, and then the one centre back they did buy, Leoni, a young Italian player, looked fantastic in the game that he played, a Carabao Cup game. Unfortunately, he got an ACL injury, so we won\u2019t see him until next season.<\/p>\n

Despite the extensive summer overhaul, Liverpool remain able to spend in the winter window and could revisit targets they pursued last summer. The club came close to signing Crystal Palace captain Marc Gu\u00e9hi on deadline day. Gu\u00e9hi reportedly completed a medical and filmed a farewell video for Palace’s social channels before the move was called off.<\/p>\n
With his contract due to expire next summer, the England international had been set to cost Liverpool around \u00a335 million, and the club may re-enter talks in January. Palace chairman Steve Parish has seemingly ruled out a mid-season exit for the defender.
