Manchester United turned down Chelsea\u2019s proposal to include Rom\u00e9o Lavia and Christopher Nkunku as part of negotiations over Alejandro Garnacho, sources have reported. Chelsea signed Garnacho for \u00a340 million, but the offer of a two-player exchange was rejected by United.<\/p>\n
The decision reflected longstanding concerns inside United about midfield reinforcements and specific fitness risks. United remain short of a reliable, world-class midfielder after the summer window, with Brighton & Hove Albion\u2019s Carlos Baleba linked but reportedly too expensive. Sporting CP\u2019s Morten Hjulmand and VfB Stuttgart\u2019s Angelo Stiller were also mentioned among continental targets.<\/p>\n
Chelsea had offered 21-year-old Lavia as part of the Garnacho discussions, but United declined to include him because of his injury record. Lavia is currently sidelined with a quadriceps injury. He played just once for Chelsea in 2023\u201324, missed 34 matches due to fitness issues last term and is still yet to complete a full 90 minutes for the club. Those factors proved decisive for United, who were unwilling to assume the risk on a talented but frequently injured midfielder.<\/p>\n
Christopher Nkunku was also presented to United in the same context. The 28-year-old, who struggled with injuries while at Chelsea, did not join United and later moved to AC Milan. He has made eight appearances for the Serie A club to date, scoring once in the Coppa Italia.<\/p>\n
ESPN have suggested United are unlikely to have the financial freedom to sign an expensive central midfielder in January. The club are expected to pursue additions next summer, when funds should be available after measures to reduce the wage bill further.<\/p>\n
