Liverpool have formally contacted referees\u2019 chief Howard Webb to challenge the disallowing of Virgil van Dijk\u2019s headed goal in the loss to Manchester City. After falling behind 1\u20130 in the first half, the Reds believed they had equalised when their captain directed a powerful header past Gianluigi Donnarumma into the net.<\/p>\n
The on-field assistant raised his flag for offside, and a VAR review confirmed the decision, wiping out Liverpool\u2019s only goal of the match. Premier League\u2019s Match Centre stated Robertson was “in an offside position and deemed to be making an obvious action directly in front of the goalkeeper.” The club dispute that description, noting Andy Robertson was to the left of Donnarumma and did not impede the goalkeeper\u2019s vision.<\/p>\n
Michael Oliver was the VAR for the game and did not call on-field official Chris Kavanagh to the monitor to look at Van Dijk\u2019s finish. The offside call stood and play resumed. Less than 10 minutes later, Nico Gonz\u00e1lez scored in first-half stoppage time to make the score 2\u20130, and City eventually won 3\u20130. Liverpool dropped to eighth in the Premier League standings following the defeat.<\/p>\n
According to The Athletic, Liverpool believe the “usual checks and balances” that normally occur during the VAR process did not take place. The club is confident that, had those steps been followed, a “different outcome” could have been reached.<\/p>\n
Arne Slot called the decision an “obvious and clear” error by the officials. Virgil van Dijk said there was “no point discussing” the disallowed goal because it ultimately did not change the outcome of the lopsided defeat.<\/p>\n
