Manchester United extended an unbeaten run to five matches, a stretch the club noted was the longest under Ruben Amorim. Despite the sequence, the Portuguese head coach remained frank about the squad\u2019s shortcomings.<\/p>\n
Asked about a similar pattern from the previous weekend against Nottingham Forest \u2014 when United took the lead, fell to a 2\u20131 deficit and then recovered to share the points \u2014 Amorim was blunt. “We have a lot of problems,” the 40-year-old sighed in his press conference, “we are just in the beginning.<\/p>\n
“I know sometimes the results show people that we are improving: we are improving but we have a lot to do. We were comfortable in the game but I think we should do better, be more aggressive, feeling the environment in the stadium and that the three points were there, the space was there.”<\/p>\n
The second half on Saturday underlined those concerns. United were notably restrained after the interval, taking just one shot before Tottenham\u2019s entirely unexpected turnaround forced the visitors out of their slumber. “I think we felt too comfortable during the game,” Amorim explained. “We need to expect that in one play anything can happen and change the mood of the stadium, and today was that. We need to do better because the game was there to take.”<\/p>\n
Amorim returned to the theme in his postmatch comments to TNT Sports. “This is the tip of the iceberg,” Amorim told TNT Sports postmatch, “we are at the beginning of becoming a strong team, so we have a lot to do.”<\/p>\n
Tottenham had played in the Champions League on Tuesday against FC Copenhagen, while Manchester United enjoyed a free week of preparation. Even so, De Ligt still admitted that he and his teammates “were a little tired” in the second half and added: “We didn\u2019t get the chance to get out of our half,” he moaned.<\/p>\n
Off the field, United\u2019s schedule will be notably lighter this season. Without any European football and following a second-round Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby Town, the club can play a maximum of 45 games across all competitions this campaign, assuming a run to the FA Cup final.
