Mauricio Pochettino has acknowledged a persistent pull back to the Premier League even as he prepares the U.S. men\u2019s national team for a home World Cup. The Argentine divides his time between a London house and the U.S. Soccer facility in Atlanta, and he made clear he remains content with his current role while also harbouring a longer-term ambition to return to England\u2019s top division.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Premier League is the best league in the world,\u201d the 53-year-old told BBC Sport in the UK. \u201cOf course I am missing it. I am so happy in America but also thinking one day to come back to the Premier League. It\u2019s the most competitive league.\u201d<\/p>\n
Pochettino\u2019s Premier League memories include a near-miss at Tottenham. \u201cI think we were so close in Tottenham , we nearly touched it [winning the Champions League and Premier League]. That is a thing that I would want to achieve,\u201d he said, underlining the unfinished business that remains with his former club.<\/p>\n
His past at Spurs remains a recurring theme. Sacked months after guiding Spurs to the Champions League final in 2019, and after overseeing a second-place finish in the 2016\u201317 Premier League, Pochettino has repeatedly spoken of a wish to return. \u201cWhen I left the club, I always remember one interview I said I would like one day to come back to Tottenham,\u201d he said to Sky Sports earlier this year.<\/p>\n
He added context to that feeling: \u201cI am in the USA, I\u2019m not going to talk about that, but what I said then still after six years, I still feel in my heart that, yes, I would like one day to come back. We see the timing.\u201d<\/p>\n
Changes at Spurs since his departure, including a long-standing relationship with chairman Daniel Levy and subsequent board adjustments, have altered the landscape. Still, Pochettino\u2019s recollections remain vivid. \u201cIt was an amazing journey that finished the way no-one wanted it to finish,\u201d Pochettino recalled in 2020 of his still fresh Spurs memories in a BT Sport interview.<\/p>\n
