Ars\u00e8ne Wenger has told viewers he believes Arsenal can finally end a long wait for a Premier League title. The former manager, now a beIN Sports pundit, pointed to the progress under Mikel Arteta and the depth of the current squad as decisive factors.<\/p>\n
Arteta has guided Arsenal to three second-place finishes over the last three years. The Manchester City team which twice pipped the Gunners has lost its sheen of invincibility while reigning champions Liverpool are enduring a ruinous run of form. For all the caution routinely expressed by Arteta and his players, expectation has shifted and Wenger is among those prepared to back Arsenal.<\/p>\n
Asked if his former side could lift the trophy come May, Wenger replied: \u201cYes, without any hesitation. You might say that I say that every year but I believe this year they are really equipped to deal with any problems.\u201d He went on to argue that Arsenal boast \u201cthe most complete squad.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen they lost Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka last season it was too much but this year you have [Noni] Madueke, [Eberechi] Eze, [Gabriel] Martinelli, [Leandro] Trossard. At the back they have [Cristhian] Mosquera, down the flanks and at the back they have replacements. [Myles] Lewis-Skelly doesn\u2019t get in the team at the moment and he\u2019s an England international.\u201d<\/p>\n
Wenger contrasted that stability with Liverpool\u2019s current difficulties. \u201cCompare them with Liverpool ,\u201d Wenger continued. \u201cI watched them against Chelsea and [Dominik] Szoboszlai was at right back and [Ryan] Gravenberch was centre back. Arsenal would not be in that kind of position.\u201d He added a measured caveat on Liverpool\u2019s prospects: \u201cSometimes you need to give players time,\u201d and noted that several individuals \u201chave the talent,\u201d though \u201cat the moment they have not reached their level.\u201d<\/p>\n
Wenger\u2019s assessment has echoes inside the club after a 4\u20130 thumping of Atl\u00e9tico Madrid on Tuesday night. Goalkeeper David Raya underlined the same point on squad strength: \u201cYes, I think so,\u201d he said. \u201cI think the depth of the squad is incredible. We have a lot of players and we have a lot of players that can play in two, three, four different positions.<\/p>\n
\u201cLike [against Atl\u00e9tico], [Mikel] Merino came on as a striker and he can play as a No. 8, he can play as a No. 10. So, that\u2019s the variety that the boss has and he\u2019s using it for our advantage and for the best of the team.
