Wayne Rooney and Roy Keane both criticised Marcus Rashford\u2019s claim that an “inconsistent environment” at Manchester United explained his struggles. Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, Rooney said the line was easy to deploy and that personal responsibility mattered more than the surroundings.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think the environment hasn\u2019t been right but that is down to yourself,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you are not playing well or you get left out of the team then I think it is easier to blame the environment and whether that is right or wrong… I think that comes from how you apply yourself.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn games we have seen with him where we know he can do more, we know he can run more\u2014that is nothing to do with an environment.<\/p>\n
\u201cI might be wrong here, I really like Marcus as a lad and as a person but I think that is an easy one to throw at people.\u201d<\/p>\n
Keane echoed that view and added that Rashford had in part contributed to problems inside the dressing room during the tail end of his time at Old Trafford. He argued an experienced player should set standards for newcomers and that some behaviours had been documented.<\/p>\n
\u201cTowards the end of his time at United, there was obviously issues,\u201d the former midfielder stressed. \u201cHe was part of the problem with the environment, especially one of the most experienced players at United.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe should have been setting the standards and showing new people at he club what it\u2019s like to be a United player. But that\u2019s been well documented. What we have to look at is he\u2019s got this chance now with England and he deserved it.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo doubt about his talent, he\u2019s obviously fantastic. But the bit that would have frustrated fans is his body language, not running back or not pressing properly. That\u2019s the things he needs to tidy up and if he does there\u2019s no reason he can\u2019t become a world class player.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think he was late for one or two meetings, on a night out in Belfast or whatever. If you\u2019re part of the environment and you\u2019re causing problems at the club by being late and not being a top pro then you\u2019re part of the problem, you\u2019re not helping the environment.<\/p>\n
