Premier League clubs will vote next month on a proposal to limit club spending after a report detailed the measure.<\/p>\n
According to The Times, a 25-page dossier explaining the plan has been circulated to all 20 Premier League clubs and is expected to be the subject of a formal vote at November’s meeting. An initial ballot on the concept saw Aston Villa, Manchester City and Manchester United oppose the idea, while Chelsea declined to vote.<\/p>\n
Manchester United and Manchester City are said to remain opposed, and the positions of the other 18 clubs in the division have not been disclosed. The proposal would, based on the 2023\u201324 season, restrict clubs to a total spending cap of \u00a3550 million ($735.9 million).<\/p>\n
Opponents argue the cap would hinder the top Premier League sides from matching continental rivals. Red Devils co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has taken a public stance against anchoring, arguing “it would simply prevent the Premier League\u2019s top sides from being able to compete with European heavyweights like Real Madrid and Barcelona.” Critics also point out that clubs on the continent are free to exceed similar budgets, raising fears the Premier League could fall behind.<\/p>\n
Other challenges remain. Some clubs believe they would be immediately in breach of the proposed rules, and the Professional Footballers\u2019 Association is monitoring developments closely amid concerns over player salaries, which are contractually guaranteed at present but may not be viable under new regulations.<\/p>\n
Proponents of the cap say it is intended to preserve competition across the division.
