Manchester United have held talks over a new contract for Harry Maguire that would keep the centre back at the club beyond seven years. He signed a six-year deal with the option of an extra 12 months, a clause that now keeps his agreement in place until the end of the current season. Without that option his terms would already have expired.<\/p>\n
Maguire was initially a key part of Ole Gunnar Solskj\u00e6r\u2019s United team and, after periods affected by fitness issues and a loss of form, has rebuilt his role in the squad. He lost the captaincy to Bruno Fernandes in 2024 but appears to have re-established himself as an important member of the group.<\/p>\n
With club football paused for internationals and Maguire absent from this month\u2019s England squad, Fabrizio Romano reports that a face-to-face meeting took place in “recent days.” More talks are expected and United are said to be broadly satisfied with Maguire\u2019s “contribution and leadership.” <\/p>\n
Interest in Maguire continued through the summer of 2024. He turned down a proposed move to West Ham United after a transfer fee had been agreed, and reports at the end of that year noted “positive discussions” over a new contract at Old Trafford. In August it was reported that three Premier League clubs and two from Serie A had made approaches earlier in the summer to explore a possible transfer. Those interested sides were informed of United\u2019s desire to keep him.<\/p>\n
Reports also linked Maguire\u2019s intentions to a long-term ambition to emulate 1990s defenders such as Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister. Maguire later appeared to more or less confirm those reports himself and, at one stage, did not rule out considering a move in January if no contract was agreed. “I\u2019m pretty sure the club have made it aware this summer that I can\u2019t leave the club on any terms with other clubs inquiring about my things and my position with my contract,” he said.<\/p>\n
