Manchester United produced a tidy 2\u20130 win over Sunderland but Ruben Amorim immediately downplayed any suggestion the result marked a turning point. With a trip to reigning champions Liverpool looming and an international break imminent, the manager refused to endorse growing optimism.<\/p>\n
When it was put to Amorim that the imminent international break may derail the momentum forged by his team\u2019s most competent performance of the season, the Portuguese tactician sniffed: \u201cThere is no momentum with our team, with the break or without the break.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe know what happens when we win one game,\u201d he sighed. \u201cThe frustration is not to see the same team at home and away.\u201d<\/p>\n
Those remarks came against a backdrop of mixed form. United had shown promise in defeat to Arsenal on the opening Sunday of the season and have since won their last three games at Old Trafford, including a victory over a Chelsea side reduced to 10 men after five minutes and successive home wins over newly promoted Burnley and Sunderland. Away from Old Trafford the picture is more concerning: the club\u2019s last top-flight away win was against relegation-doomed Leicester City in March, and Fulham are the only current Premier League outfit the side have beaten on the road in 2025.<\/p>\n
Mason Mount, introduced among several changes, opened the scoring against Sunderland and offered a more positive readout. \u201cWe\u2019re 100% behind the gaffer,\u201d he told BBC Sport. \u201cWe\u2019ve had some results that hurt us\u2014the team, the staff and the fans\u2014but that was important today. \u201cWe want to get back-to-back wins,\u201d Mount continued, \u201cthen three in a row and push on for the top four.\u201d<\/p>\n
Amorim remained guarded. \u201cI know they want to do the best\u2014and I know they don\u2019t want to change the coach all the time,\u201d he said. \u201cBut to be with the manager is: \u2018I will kill myself to go in every transition.\u2019\u201d Amorim added. \u201cWe need to show with actions and when we see the games in the end, they know that sometimes we can do better. So, I feel that during the week, but we need to show that on the pitch, not just at home, but also away.\u201d<\/p>\n
