Chelsea produced a dramatic late turnaround to beat defending champions Liverpool 2-1 at Stamford Bridge.<\/p>\n
The match began with Chelsea probing with balls in behind. Jo\u00e3o Pedro played a pass that sent Alejandro Garnacho through, but the weight of the pass allowed Giorgi Mamardashvili to come out and clear. Chelsea responded 14 minutes in when Mois\u00e9s Caicedo unleashed a long-range drive that flew into the top corner to put the hosts ahead.<\/p>\n
Defensively Caicedo was effective throughout the first half, while Beno\u00eet Badiashile and Josh Acheampong dealt comfortably with Liverpool\u2019s forward movements. Garnacho struck a shot narrowly wide and then appealed strongly for a penalty under pressure from Dominik Szoboszlai; referee Anthony Taylor dismissed the claims and a quick VAR check confirmed the decision.<\/p>\n
Badiashile limped off early in the second half with what appeared to be a hamstring problem. Liverpool equalised when Cody Gakpo found the net beyond Robert S\u00e1nchez to make it 1-1. Chelsea\u2019s problems at centre back deepened when Josh Acheampong also went off injured with around 20 minutes remaining, increasing the number of unavailable centre backs to five.<\/p>\n
Enzo Fern\u00e1ndez tested the frame of the goal with a fizzing cross as the clock ran down. Mamardashvili made acrobatic, though comfortable, stops from Jamie Gittens and Est\u00eav\u00e3o. Fern\u00e1ndez\u2019s stoppage-time header struck the post, but Chelsea kept pressing.<\/p>\n
In the 95th minute Est\u00eav\u00e3o slid in to finish Marc Cucurella\u2019s cross and secure the winner, “to send Enzo Maresca sprinting down the Stamford Bridge touchline in celebration.” The Chelsea manager received a second yellow for his celebrations, but Anthony Taylor\u2019s final whistle confirmed a famous home victory.<\/p>\n
