Florian Wirtz has acknowledged an unusual dip in form since his record move to Liverpool in the summer, describing the adaptation as something he has not experienced before in his career. The 22-year-old has been unable to register a goal or an assist in either the Premier League or the Champions League to date, though he did lay on a goal in the Community Shield. For the weekend\u2019s Merseyside derby against Everton he was used from the bench.<\/p>\n
Wirtz contrasted his own adjustment with that of fellow new signing Hugo Ekitik\u00e9, who joined from Eintracht Frankurt and has adapted quickly to the Premier League. While Ekitik\u00e9 has settled in, Wirtz said the current phase represents a challenge he has rarely faced.<\/p>\n
\u201cOf course I would have liked to have scored a goal,\u201d Wirtz told Sky Sport Germany .<\/p>\n
He was clear about his state of mind and his approach to the slow start. \u201cBut no matter what anyone says, I\u2019m staying cool. I know what I\u2019m capable of, and I also know that I\u2019ll really bring it to the pitch at some point, so I\u2019m just staying cool.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don’t want to hear: \u2018Give it time, give it time.\u2019 Instead, I simply try to do better each time than before. And sometimes there are phases where things might not go well for you; I haven\u2019t had that very often in my career. Once I get through it\u2014that\u2019s perhaps harsh, because I\u2019m not playing badly, I just haven\u2019t got the [goals and assists] yet\u2014it will come eventually, and then everything will be fine.<\/p>\n
The assessment is straightforward: Wirtz recognises the gap between expectation and current output and is publicly committing to steady improvement.
