Pep Guardiola and his former apprentice Mikel Arteta have produced a recurring tactical duel since 2020. Guardiola has generally had the upper hand, but recent results show Arsenal closing the gap.<\/p>\n
Their first encounter took place at an empty Etihad Stadium during the coronavirus pandemic. David Luiz\u2019s second-half red card proved costly after Raheem Sterling had already given City the lead. Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden added further goals as City ran out comfortable winners.<\/p>\n
A month later the sides met in an FA Cup semi-final behind closed doors. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang\u2019s brace earned Arsenal victory and a place in the final. Arsenal would go on to win the trophy with another double from Aubameyang at Wembley.<\/p>\n

Nathan Ak\u00e9\u2019s second-half goal earned City a 1\u20130 FA Cup fourth-round win that season, a result on the route to a campaign that produced a historic treble for Guardiola\u2019s side, which included an FA Cup final win over Manchester United.<\/p>\n
In 2022\u201323 De Bruyne\u2019s finishing, plus contributions from Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland, helped City to key wins at the Emirates and Etihad, the latter a heavy victory in which De Bruyne scored twice and assisted, with John Stones and Haaland also on the scoresheet. That run became seven successive wins for Guardiola against Arteta.<\/p>\n
The Community Shield that followed went to Arsenal on penalties after Leandro Trossard\u2019s stoppage-time equaliser; Cole Palmer had appeared to have given City the lead. Arsenal then notched their first league victory over Guardiola when Gabriel Martinelli\u2019s late deflected strike won at the Etihad. A later goalless draw held in the same season.<\/p>\n
Early in 2024\u201325 Arsenal overturned Erling Haaland\u2019s opener through Riccardo Calafiori and Gabriel, but Leandro Trossard\u2019s second yellow reduced Arsenal to ten men and John Stones\u2019 98th-minute leveller sealed a 2\u20132 draw.
