Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim sought to put a measured gloss on a recent gathering with co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, describing the encounter as routine and centred on support. The meeting, which took place on Thursday, followed a defeat to Manchester City and came amid scrutiny of the team\u2019s recent performances. The appearance by the co-owner was thought to have been planned in advance rather than a knee-jerk response to results.<\/p>\n
Asked for specifics, Amorim responded with a joke: \u201cNew contract, he was offering me a new contract.\u201d He then set out the tone of the discussion in more practical terms. \u201cNo, it\u2019s normal things, just to show the support, explaining that it\u2019s a long project. He said many times, \u2018This is my third season.\u2019 For me, it\u2019s not. But normal things.<\/p>\n
\u201cI spoke with him, with Omar [Berrrada, CEO], with Jason [Wilcox, director of football], just trying to see all the data around the team. So, a normal meeting, and we had several, but in this moment, it\u2019s normal that people pay attention to that.\u201d<\/p>\n
Amorim also reflected on the heightened expectations that accompany his role. \u201cThis is football and this is the club with more pressure, maybe, than any in the world, but we want to win,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Looking back to last season and the early results this campaign, Amorim acknowledged room for improvement in specific areas while arguing the team has progressed in others. \u201cLast year I was very critical of the way we played. I think we are playing well until the boxes, defending and attacking. We need to be more aggressive in the boxes. We need to be more clinical. The rest I think we are improving compared to last year. We are in a better place.<\/p>\n
