Manuel Akanji has completed a move away from Manchester City to Inter, joining the Italian club on a loan deal that includes a conditional purchase clause. The transfer follows interest from multiple clubs across Europe and arrives after three seasons in Manchester that yielded seven trophies.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Swiss defender, born in 1995, has arrived on loan from Manchester City with an option to make the deal permanent, which will become an obligation if certain conditions are met,\u201d Inter confirmed in their statement.<\/p>\n
Sky Italia report the deal carries an initial fee of \u20ac2 million (\u00a31.7 million; $2.3 million) and includes a \u20ac15 million (\u00a313 million, $17.5 million) purchase option. That option becomes mandatory only if Akanji features in at least 50% of matches or if Inter win Serie A.<\/p>\n
Akanji departs City having made 136 appearances in sky blue and having been deployed across all four positions in Pep Guardiola\u2019s backline. His 2024\u201325 season was disrupted by injury, with the defender missing 19 matches across all competitions.<\/p>\n
Despite recovering physically, Akanji did not play in Manchester City\u2019s opening three matches of the 2025\u201326 Premier League season. Guardiola opted to start John Stones, R\u00faben Dias and Abdukodir Khusanov in central defence for those fixtures. Manchester City have suffered consecutive defeats to Tottenham and Brighton, conceding four goals across the two games.<\/p>\n
At Inter, Akanji will work under Cristian Chivu and provides cover following Benjamin Pavard\u2019s move to Olympique Marseille. Inter recently suffered a 2\u20131 defeat to Udinese, making the addition a timely reinforcement.<\/p>\n
Manchester City have also moved a large number of players during the summer, parting ways with over 20 individuals since the start of the window.
