Real Betis have stepped away from negotiations with Manchester United over Antony after concluding they cannot meet both the transfer fee and the player\u2019s financial demands.<\/p>\n
Initial reports from The Athletic suggested an agreement had been reached, described as an initial \u20ac25 million (\u00a321.7 million, $29.2 million) plus \u20ac3 million in add-ons, with United to receive 50% of any profit from a future sale. Spanish outlets quickly challenged that account and Betis issued formal corrections to several English media organisations.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is no agreement and we have withdrawn the transfer offer because Real Betis can\u2019t afford the transfer fee and the amounts that Manchester United must [instead] pay the player before the transfer,\u201d a statement sent to talkSPORT read.<\/p>\n
BBC Sport later quoted Betis as saying: \u201cBetis has retired its offer. Betis cannot afford a transfer fee, nor the amounts the player is supposed to receive.\u201d<\/p>\n
Central to the breakdown are Antony\u2019s wage demands. The Brazil international faces a substantial reduction in pay and is understood to be seeking compensation to relinquish the final two years of his Manchester United contract, which is worth \u00a36 million per season. Betis want United to agree a pay-off with Antony; United are reluctant to commit to a significant payment solely to remove the former Ajax star from their wage bill. As a result, the proposed transfer has stalled.<\/p>\n
