Ruben Amorim has acknowledged the emotional turbulence that comes with managing Manchester United as the club seeks consistency early in the 2025\/26 season. The Portuguese coach conceded the rollercoaster nature of the job \u201csometimes\u201d makes him want to quit, alternated with a desire to stay for \u201c20 years\u201d.<\/p>\n
United have found results hard to match with performance. The opening defeat against Arsenal and a 1\u20131 draw with Fulham underlined the problem of failing to convert control into points. That trend was compounded on Wednesday when United were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Grimsby Town, three leagues below. Amorim\u2019s immediate reaction after that exit included the damning line that \u201csomething has to change\u201d.<\/p>\n
Speaking before the weekend home match with Burnley at Old Trafford, Amorim described his response as raw and personal rather than calculated for the media. \u201cTo be really honest with you guys every time we had, or have in the future, one defeat like [Grimsby], I\u2019m going to be like that,\u201d the Portuguese coach explained. \u201cI\u2019m going to say sometimes I hate, sometimes I love my players, sometimes I want to defend my players. This is my way of doing things and I\u2019m going to be like that. Sometimes I want to quit, sometimes I want to be here for 20 years.<\/p>\n
\u201cI felt in that moment, I was so frustrated and annoyed. I know you have a lot of experienced people talking about the way I should perform with the media\u2014to be more constant, to be more calm. I\u2019m not going to be like that. I am trying to accept that, I\u2019m going to be who I am. That\u2019s why I have the passion that I have. In that moment, I was really upset and really disappointed, because I felt like we had a good pre-season, we were playing better, we were being consistent in the way we played.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe played badly [for] 30 minutes against Fulham, and then that kind of performance [at Grimsby], I was really disappointed with everything. But now, it\u2019s a new game and I\u2019m focused on that.\u201d<\/p>\n
