Newcastle United have agreed a club-record transfer to sign Germany international Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart. The 23-year-old striker becomes the Magpies\u2019 most expensive signing, overtaking the fee paid to acquire Alexander Isak (in the summer of 2022).<\/p>\n
Stuttgart had rejected three bids from Bayern Munich earlier in the window and insisted Woltemade was not for sale. Newcastle responded with an offer that Stuttgart accepted and the forward is now on his way to Tyneside.<\/p>\n
Eddie Howe\u2019s side had a clear need for a new centre forward after Callum Wilson departed on a free transfer to join West Ham. That requirement was amplified by Alexander Isak trying to force a move to Liverpool.<\/p>\n
Newcastle pursued several alternatives before securing Woltemade. Attempts to sign Jo\u00e3o Pedro, Liam Delap, Hugo Ekitik\u00e9, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin \u0160e\u0161ko were unsuccessful, and the club even deployed Anthony Gordon as a makeshift centre forward in the interim.<\/p>\n
Woltemade joined Stuttgart a season ago and scored 18 goals in 38 total appearances for the club. He also netted six goals at the U-21 Euros and won the Golden Boot for that tournament this summer. Observers note he is a strong box presence who also possesses on-the-ball skills not often seen in players of his size.<\/p>\n
For Newcastle the immediate benefit is clear: they have secured a potential replacement for Alexander Isak. The club\u2019s preferred framing, however, is that Woltemade is a replacement for Callum Wilson rather than a direct stand-in for Isak.
