The Independent Football Regulator has raised the stakes around Manchester City\u2019s ongoing case, with chair David Kogan saying the body has the power to force a sale of the club\u2019s owners if that is judged to be the right sanction.<\/p>\n
Manchester City, eight-time Premier League champions, are appealing after being found guilty of financial misconduct spanning nine years. The outcome of that appeal is currently due by Jan. 23, 2027, and any punishment would follow only once that process is complete.<\/p>\n
Kogan made clear that no final judgment will be taken before the appeal is heard, but he did not shy away from the regulator\u2019s authority. When asked whether City could resist a sale, he said: \u201cNo, no, no. We\u2019ve got absolute power to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n
He also stressed that the IFR would not rush to a conclusion before the facts are fully tested. \u201cI am not going to get pushed into making any judgment on this until we\u2019ve seen all of those questions being answered. Then we will have to decide whether we\u2019re going to mount our own investigation and come to a conclusion on that and what we\u2019re going to do. And pre-empting that would be a colossal mistake,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The case has already drawn strong reaction from outside England. La Liga president Javier Tebas has been one of the most vocal critics of City since the guilty verdict, calling for \u201cjustice\u201d for the Premier League and European football more broadly.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the SPORTEL business conference in Monaco, Tebas said: \u201cI\u2019m interested in understanding how this story will end. It is important for both the Premier League and the European football ecosystem,\u201d Tebas said. \u201cThere are people who have had to leave UEFA because of Manchester City, so I think we need justice for the Premier League, for Europe and UEFA.\u201d<\/p>\n
