Dominik Szoboszlai’s latest return to Liverpool’s starting side ended after only 32 minutes, with injury forcing him out of the Premier League meeting with Brentford.

Andoni Iraola had entered Saturday’s trip unsure whether Szoboszlai was ready to start, but Thursday and Friday’s training sessions persuaded him to include the midfielder from the outset alongside Alexis Mac Allister. It proved to be a decision that went badly wrong.

Half an hour into the match in west London, Szoboszlai collapsed on the pitch with no other player involved. Liverpool’s medical staff walked over from the dugout to the side of the halfway line, but the midfielder had already made up his mind. After a disappointed shake of the head, he left the field and headed down the tunnel.

Liverpool were already short in midfield because Ryan Gravenberch was suspended, and the side soon paid a further price by conceding a soft header that left them behind at half-time.

Exactly what caused the problem is still unclear. With no contact involved, and with Szoboszlai having been used in a more controlled deeper role during a promising spell, the concern is that this may be a return of the muscular issue that has troubled him recently.

Until now, he had been relatively fortunate with injuries. The hamstring problem that ruled him out of the heavy defeat to Manchester City and the win over LASK was his first fitness setback since February 2024.

At that point, he missed 10 Liverpool matches in succession with a hamstring issue, and it had not surfaced again until now.

The full picture will only emerge with time, and any recovery will depend on how things develop. What is certain is that coming back so recently from another setback will give Liverpool reason for concern.
