Bruno Fernandes missed the spot-kick, sending his effort over the bar after Kavanagh inadvertently bumped into him as he prepared to take it. Fernandes refused to lay the blame on the official but acknowledged the incident affected him.<\/p>\n
Asked if the collision with the referee put him off, Fernandes told BBC Sport: \u201cNo, as like everyone you have your own routine.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was preparing myself to get the penalty. That put me a little bit off my nerves but it\u2019s not because of that why I missed the penalty. I missed because I kicked the ball very bad.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fernandes told Sky Sports he was displeased with the lack of an apology from the referee. \u201cIt upset me because the referee didn\u2019t apologise. That is what triggered me in that moment but that\u2019s not the excuse for missing the penalty.\u201d<\/p>\n
United manager Ruben Amorim agreed that the referee did not alter the outcome by contact. \u201cNo, I think he\u2019s not used to missing a penalty,\u201d he said. \u201cHe knows that every moment in this context can have a huge impact on the team.<\/p>\n
\u201cI felt that during the game he was not so happy, not so involved, because he had so much responsibility and he felt the missed penalty was huge for us.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fulham defender Calvin Bassey described the original decision as \u201charsh\u201d and defended his challenge on Mount, saying he had tried to stay strong and communicate with the referee about blocks. \u201cI still think it\u2019s harsh,\u201d Bassey told Sky Sports. \u201cI understand why it\u2019s given. I\u2019m trying to stay strong because I know the block’s coming, and then I\u2019ve pulled him over my foot.<\/p>\n
