Chelsea’s start under Xabi Alonso has hit its first real fitness concern, with João Pedro pulling out of Brazil duty because of an unspecified injury.

The striker’s withdrawal arrives at a time when Chelsea are preparing to return to domestic action on Friday, when they face Brentford away from home. The London rivals sit only one point and one place behind Chelsea in the Premier League table, which leaves Alonso with a test that could come quickly if Pedro is not ready in time.

Pedro has settled sharply into life under Alonso, producing three goals and three assists in only four Premier League appearances. He has formed a strong understanding with Rogers and Palmer in a fluid front line that has given Chelsea an electric beginning to the campaign, even if the trio still does not have a settled nickname.

If Pedro is unavailable, Danny Welbeck would be the most natural candidate to lead the attack. The 35-year-old has mostly featured in cup football, though he has already scored three times in two Carabao Cup appearances. Even so, replacing Pedro is not simply a matter of swapping one striker for another. The challenge for Alonso is preserving the rhythm between the front three, especially the connections Pedro has already developed with Palmer and Rogers.

Welbeck has shown flashes of useful link-up play, but he does not offer the same movement or flair as Pedro, who is 11 years younger.

Alonso’s other option on the bench may be harder to judge. Emmanuel Emegha, who joined from Strasbourg in the summer, is still recovering from a hamstring injury and has not yet featured. He is thought to be close to a return, but Chelsea may decide to hold him back until after the international break.
