Manchester United’s discussions with club captain Bruno Fernandes are stretching on, with the two sides still reported to be some way from agreement after more than three months of talks.

There is, however, a potential safeguard for the Red Devils. They hold an option to extend his deal until the end of next season, which would push back any immediate concern over him leaving on a free transfer when the current campaign ends. Even so, his long-term position beyond the next 21 months remains uncertain.

Fernandes continues to set the standard at Old Trafford. He was the outstanding player in victories over Ipswich Town and Sabah, and even in the opening loss to Hull City he produced the most touches of anyone on the pitch. Across every match so far, regardless of result, he has created chances.

The issue returned to the spotlight when David Ornstein described the situation as an “impasse” on Sky Sports. “We understand that Bruno Fernandes continues to be in talks with United over a new contract, but there is no breakthrough,” he said.

Fabrizio Romano offered a less gloomy view. “It’s not off, it’s not collapsing, it’s not over,” he said in a video on his self-titled YouTube channel, adding that talks started in the gap between the end of last season and the 2026 World Cup and have taken place each month since.

Romano said there are “several points still to clarify”, including salary and contract length. Fernandes, who recently turned 32, has a strong case to be considered for improved terms after another productive spell. Since August 2025, he has made 42 appearances, started 41 times, played 3,648 minutes, scored 13 goals, supplied 23 assists and created 150 chances.

From his point of view, becoming the club’s top earner would appear justified given his output since arriving at Old Trafford in 2020. The larger obstacle may be the length of any new deal, along with any release clause and its conditions. Under his current contract, an offer worth £57 million ($77 million) could trigger a transfer if he agrees to it.
