Roy Keane delivered a pointed assessment of Bruno Fernandes after the incident that led to Phil Foden’s dismissal in the first half of Sunday’s Manchester derby.

Referee Michael Oliver showed Foden a straight red card, with VAR backing the decision and ruling that the Manchester City player had committed violent conduct. Fernandes, however, was not booked, leaving United with a numerical edge from the 23rd minute.

Speaking at half-time on Sky Sports, Keane questioned the interpretation of the moment and argued that Fernandes deserved scrutiny for his part in the flashpoint. The former United midfielder was blunt in his judgement, saying Foden should not have been dismissed.

“Bruno [Fernandes] goes in, tackles him, clearly fouls him and gives him a little boot on the floor,” Keane said. “Foden gets up, does react, and he’s now sent off. I’m guessing it’s classed as violent conduct, but to me, Bruno’s the one who’s violent here.

“I have to call it out. I called Kyle Walker out a few years ago when he went down to a head butt [which led to United striker Rasmus Hojlund seeing a red card]. I don’t think that’s a red card for Foden, I really don’t.”

Keane continued to press the same point, insisting that both players had been involved in a needlessly messy exchange. “Foden’s a bit daft here, but so is Bruno,” Keane added. “If Bruno got sent off for that and nothing happened with Foden then we’d be saying, ‘Do you know what, Bruno was a bit daft, a bit silly.’ The players are all in the PFA, everyone’s in a union, you’ve got to try and look out for each other; you can’t be rolling around.”

“Bruno has got to do better there. People say there’s tension and it’s a big game, but you’ve got to look out for your teammates and the opposition players as well. Foden, I don’t think it’s a red card.”

City later overturned the setback and won at Old Trafford through Erling Haaland’s second-half winner. New manager Enzo Maresca then reflected on the incident, saying: “It can be a red card, but in the same action, it can be a red card for Bruno. It is what it is,” before adding that the dismissal had also removed one of United’s best traits.
