For the first time in 476 days, Manchester United selected a Premier League starting XI without Luke Shaw. The absence, however, is expected to be temporary rather than prolonged.<\/p>\n
Michael Carrick chose not to take any risks with his only senior natural left back for Thursday\u2019s Champions League meeting with Sabah FK. With United clear favourites and the Manchester derby following soon after, the call was viewed as cautious rather than alarming.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a little bit of that [managing him],\u201d Carrick told TNT Sports in midweek. \u201cHe came off the other day [at Everton] with a little bit of cramp. We didn\u2019t want to take any risks really. We tried to manage him.\u201d<\/p>\n
Shaw did not recover in time for Sunday\u2019s match, but Carrick remained upbeat about how quickly he could return. \u201cLuke is not quite ready yet,\u201d the United boss told Sky Sports on Sunday, \u201cbut he is very close.\u201d<\/p>\n
United\u2019s starting XI was: Senne Lammens; Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Mart\u00ednez, Patrick Dorgu; Kobbie Mainoo, Youri Tielemans; Bryan Mbeumo, Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford; Matheus Cunha.<\/p>\n
The substitutes were Karl Darlow (GK), Ayden Heaven, Mason Mount, Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, Andrey Santos, Noussair Mazraoui, Shea Lacey and Benjamin \u0160e\u0161ko.<\/p>\n
Dorgu was the man asked to step into Shaw\u2019s role against City. Originally signed by Ruben Amorim as a left wingback, the Denmark international has looked strongest under Carrick at left wing. With Marcus Rashford back in the frontline, Dorgu has been moved deeper once again.<\/p>\n
That arrangement worked adequately in midweek, when Dorgu set up Matheus Cunha\u2019s opening goal in an impressive display. Even so, the 21-year-old is likely to face a much sterner challenge against Phil Foden, Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo than he did against Sabah, whose right winger Kaheem Parris is 26 and has not been selected by Jamaica for three years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
