Chelsea were denied a victory at Stamford Bridge as Hull City left with a 2-2 draw, and the match again exposed the same imbalance that has followed Xabi Alonso’s side this season. The attack offered enough to keep Chelsea alive, but mistakes at the back turned a winnable game into another uneasy evening.

Hull took advantage of two defensive lapses, with Jorrel Hato’s error helping Mohamed Belloumi level the score before the Algerian struck again six minutes later. Emi Martínez was unable to deal with a corner, Semi Ajayi’s header struck the bar, and Belloumi reacted quickest to turn in the rebound.

Chelsea responded through Pedro in the 66th minute, after Cole Palmer supplied the final pass for a finish from close range. That goal underlined the growing influence of the club’s new-look front line, which has already produced 14 goal contributions this season. Pedro has six of them, while Palmer and Morgan Rogers have four each.

Yet the broader picture remains uncomfortable. Chelsea continue to carry threat in the final third, but the defensive side of their game is making life far more difficult than it should be. The goalkeeper situation, in particular, remains under scrutiny. Martínez arrived as the new No. 1 after replacing Robert Sánchez, but his display against Hull offered little reassurance. He misread the corner that led to Hull’s second goal and later spilled a long-range effort that should have been held more cleanly.

The numbers tell a similar story. Chelsea had more of the ball and more shots on target, but Hull created the better chances and finished with a higher expected-goals figure. It was another reminder that, for all the attacking promise, the problems at the other end are still unresolved.

Among the outfield players, Wesley Fofana stood out for his strength and distribution, while Reece James was influential from set pieces and after moving to right back. Palmer was central to the equaliser, João Pedro was Chelsea’s most decisive player, and Rogers missed a late chance to win it.

Chelsea may have changed personnel, but they have not yet changed the pattern.
