Premier League clubs have received their Christmas fixture plans seven weeks earlier than they did last season, after pressure mounted on the league and U.K. broadcasters to move sooner and limit disruption for supporters.

The key issue is television selection. U.K. rights holders can choose matches for live coverage and, in doing so, can shift kick-off times earlier or later, or even move a fixture to Friday, Sunday or Monday. When those decisions arrive too late, the impact on match-going fans can be significant, particularly for those travelling away from home.

Most supporters still rely on public transport to get to Premier League games, which makes timing especially important at this time of year. Journeys that are manageable during the rest of the season become more difficult over Christmas, when bus and train services are reduced or stop altogether. Extra notice gives fans a better chance to plan around those changes.

The Daily Mail writes that Manchester United were involved in talks with the Premier League and broadcasters to request that fans “be looked after” when considering TV picks. Several other clubs are believed to have made similar contact.

The schedule still contains awkward journeys. Manchester City supporters heading to Newcastle for the 8 p.m. kick-off on Saturday, Dec. 26, will face a difficult trip. Even so, the late Sunday, Dec. 27 slot has at least gone to an all-London meeting between Arsenal and Crystal Palace.

Christmas football remains deeply embedded in the English game. Matches have not been played on Christmas Day since the early 1960s, but Boxing Day, Dec. 26, continues to hold a special place in the calendar.

There was a time when all 20 Premier League clubs played on Boxing Day, regardless of the weekday. TV scheduling has since spread fixtures across two or three days, but as recently as 2024–25 most teams still played on Dec. 26, which fell on a Thursday that year. Last season drew criticism and disappointment because only one match, Manchester United 1–0 Newcastle United, took place on Boxing Day.
