You can make the first choice within one position. The second can involve several transfers and sacrifices elsewhere in your squad.

For GW4, judge the full set of changes before you confirm them. You may improve your team with one purchase, need three moves to repair several problems, or prefer to keep your existing XI. Assess your Triple Captain plan on its own merits too, with several opportunities remaining before the first chip expires after GW19.

Make three transfers earn their cost

Start with the players you would sell. Write down the reason for each move and the improvement you expect over your chosen holding period.

Replacing three injured or unwanted players can justify spending three saved transfers. Moving two useful players to cheaper alternatives so you can afford one fashionable name requires a larger gain from that final purchase. Include the points and flexibility you give up in the other positions.

For example, a midfield upgrade may look attractive in isolation. Add the defender downgrade needed to pay for it, then the second move needed to balance the budget. Compare those three incoming players with the three you own. If you struggle to explain why the combined group improves your team, keep looking for a cheaper route or hold your transfers.

You can test the complete transfer plan in We Play FPL, using future squad drafts to compare line-ups across several Gameweeks before changing your live team. Keep the same holding period for both drafts so a strong GW4 fixture does not hide a problem in the following weeks.

Hall or Thiaw: spend the extra £0.1m if you have it

For a fresh Newcastle defender purchase, I prefer Hall at £5.1m to Thiaw at £5.0m. Hall has offered more attacking involvement and a higher defensive-contribution rate across the opening three league games.

Hall has played 269 minutes, with 0.23 expected goal involvements per 90 minutes (xGI/90), 1.82 expected goals conceded per 90 (xGC/90) and 10.04 defensive contributions per 90 (DefCon/90). Thiaw has played 270 minutes, with 0.02 xGI/90, 1.82 xGC/90 and 7.00 DefCon/90. These are season-to-date rates from GW1–3, a small sample rather than a forecast of their next returns.

At that price difference, Hall’s extra involvement makes him the more attractive new purchase. Both defenders depend on Newcastle’s clean sheets, so choose between them through the points they can add around that shared exposure. Hall’s contribution average cannot guarantee a payout in his next match.

Thiaw remains a workable choice if £5.0m is your limit. An existing Thiaw owner has a different calculation: the small cash difference does not remove the cost of using a transfer. Prioritise problems in your squad before making that switch.

Gibbs-White should fit the midfield you want

Gibbs-White suits a settled squad with £7.9m available for a midfielder. He has completed all 270 minutes and ranks first in Forest’s penalty order. Forest visit Aston Villa in GW4, host Coventry in GW5 and visit Crystal Palace in GW6, so judge the purchase across that run.

His GW1–3 rates are 0.47 xG/90 and 0.04 expected assists per 90 (xA/90), for 0.51 xGI/90. The xG includes penalties. You are paying for dependable involvement and penalty opportunity; the early assist expectation is modest.

Rogers costs £7.6m, a £0.3m saving in the same FPL position. He has recorded 0.41 xG/90 and 0.40 xA/90 across 257 minutes, for 0.81 xGI/90. Chelsea host Hull in GW4, visit Brentford in GW5 and host Bournemouth in GW6. Those early rates warrant consideration if you need a cheaper midfielder, while the three-game sample limits how much confidence you should place in the gap.

If Gibbs-White fits without weakening positions you want to keep, he is a reasonable purchase. If you need several downgrades to reach him, compare the whole transfer package with the cheaper midfield option. His Coventry fixture alone does not justify those sacrifices.

Give a delayed Triple Captain plan a fallback

You can use the first Triple Captain through GW19. GW4 offers Chelsea at home to Hull, but you have time to assess other fixtures if you prefer to save the chip.

Manchester City host Sunderland in GW5, Ipswich in GW7, Fulham in GW11 and Hull in GW16. Treat those as dates to review alongside your captain’s fitness and expected minutes. A fixture several months away gives you a planning option; you cannot know the line-up in advance.

Waiting until GW16 leaves less room to respond to an injury or a rest. Keep an alternative within the remaining window: Liverpool visit Hull in GW17, while Arsenal host Ipswich and Liverpool host Coventry in GW19. Choose the player near the relevant deadline, once you can assess availability and recent involvement.

Separate that chip decision from spending your transfer bank. You can improve a weak position without activating Triple Captain, and you can consider the chip with a captain you own. Before the GW4 deadline on 12 September at 12:30 UTC, check the remaining midweek minutes and team news, then confirm the purchases that improve your full squad.

Compare Hall with Thiaw, judge Gibbs-White against the full transfer cost, and give a delayed Triple Captain plan a fallback before GW19.

[1976,2031,173,1977
1984
post-19316","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-chip-strategy","category-fixtures-epl","category-fpl","category-player-analysis","tag-gameweek-4
["GET
