Manchester United may need to look elsewhere after a fresh development involving Newcastle United left back Lewis Hall, who has reportedly agreed a new deal at St James\u2019 Park.<\/p>\n
Hall had been the leading option for United, but Newcastle were always clear that he was not available. United examined alternatives as well, including Barcelona\u2019s Alejandro Balde and Manchester City\u2019s Rayan A\u00eft-Nouri, yet the conditions attached to those possible moves were not attractive enough and the club stepped away.<\/p>\n
The situation has now shifted further against United. Hall was said to be open to a move, but The Times reports that United\u2019s enquiry came at roughly the same time Newcastle were already \u201cprogressing\u201d in talks over a new contract that includes a substantial pay increase. That would place Hall among the \u201cbest paid\u201d players in the squad.<\/p>\n
The agreement is understood to be a five-year contract, extending his previous deal by two seasons. His former deal had been due to run until the end of the 2028-29 campaign, while the new arrangement lasts until 2031.<\/p>\n
Newcastle were not under pressure to sell. Their summer sales of Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimar\u00e3es gave them financial strength, but Hall\u2019s contract situation meant there was still no urgency. With five years now separating him from free agency, their leverage in any future talks only improves. In theory, his valuation can rise further.<\/p>\n
United could still make another approach, but persuading Newcastle to accept around $81 million (\u00a360 million) within the next two years looks increasingly difficult. Marc Cucurella remains the most expensive left back in Premier League history after his 2022 move from Brighton & Hove Albion to Chelsea, a deal worth up to \u00a363 million.<\/p>\n
Hall remains a rare combination of present value and long-term potential. At 22, he is young enough to be viewed as an investment, yet already among the best left backs in England. If his progress continues in a younger Newcastle side doing well under new manager Matthias Jaissle, he could be in line to start for England at Euro 2028.<\/p>\n
The other names United considered this summer did not offer the same balance. Balde and A\u00eft-Nouri both sit behind at least one natural left back at their clubs, while Jorge Salinas has limited senior experience despite his breakout season in La Liga 2 for Racing Santander in 2025-26.
