Chelsea’s failure to secure a suitable replacement for Enzo Fernández before the deadline may leave the club targeting a major midfield signing in January.

Fernández’s exit was only completed on deadline day, which gave Chelsea little room to bring in a successor for their 2025-26 vice-captain. The club did try to strengthen the position, but no midfield addition arrived before the window closed.

That left the squad short in central areas, a concern that was quickly exposed in the 2-1 defeat against Arsenal, where Xabi Alonso’s improvised midfield struggled. For now, Alonso must work with the players he has, but a winter move for another midfielder looks increasingly likely.

January deals usually come with a higher price tag, though Chelsea have previously shown a willingness to spend heavily in the winter market. Fernández himself arrived for a record fee in the 2023 January window.

With that vacancy still open, several names could return to Chelsea’s radar when the next window opens.

Frenkie de Jong remains one of the game’s best central midfielders when fully fit. A move may seem ambitious, but it is not beyond the realm of possibility. He has not played since the 2026 World Cup after suffering a partially torn MCL. Barcelona want him to undergo surgery, but he has so far preferred conservative treatment. If that approach works and he returns soon, Chelsea may decide to act, especially with Barcelona’s midfield depth making competition for places fierce.

Manu Koné was another player Chelsea came close to landing on deadline day, before Gian Piero Gasperini blocked the move. Reports claimed Chelsea had an offer of $70.2 million (£52 million) plus Jamie Gittens on loan. Koné is a strong duel-winner with clear quality in possession, and a January enquiry could still make sense.

Adam Wharton has also drawn major interest across Europe. Chelsea reportedly offered Bournemouth $86 million (£64 million) earlier in the summer, and multiple reports say he sits near the top of their shortlist. At 22, he fits the profile of a progressive midfielder with room to grow.

Lamine Camara, meanwhile, briefly looked set for Stamford Bridge before Monaco pulled out. Chelsea had agreed terms on a six-year deal, and the club could revisit the deal in winter.

Alex Scott is another option, with Chelsea previously offering Bournemouth $86 million (£64 million) for him. Still only 23, he remains one of the most complete young midfielders in the division.
