Chelsea’s early-season momentum in 2026/27 met its first real setback at the home of the champions, but the 2-1 loss did not flatten Xabi Alonso’s side. Instead, it offered a clearer picture of where the project stands after a contest that swung sharply before Arsenal settled it.

The opening half was played at a brisk pace, with Chelsea refusing to be overrun and even forcing Arsenal into a more uneven game than they usually prefer. Former Blue Kai Havertz brought the champions level in the midst of the first-half chaos, before Martin Ødegaard put Arsenal ahead again after the break and restored control for the hosts.

One of the key pre-match questions centred on Moisés Caicedo, but he was not included in Alonso’s matchday squad. With no Enzo Fernández replacement arriving on Deadline Day, Reece James and Roméo Lavia were asked to operate in the midfield pivot. Lavia showed enough to suggest there is real value for Alonso to work with, although he was caught out at a decisive moment when Arsenal found the space that led to the winner.

Chelsea also received a reminder that the goalkeeping position is not settled. The winner was not chiefly about a single error, but the opening goal from Havertz was one Martínez could have dealt with. He finished with eight saves and a FotMob figure of 0.39 goals prevented, yet the sense remained that Chelsea have not signed a flawless solution.

In attack, Chelsea produced moments that threatened Arsenal’s previously impeccable defensive record. They had already scored freely in earlier matches, and they again showed they can create danger from range and in transition. Pedro Neto hit the post before half-time, while Rogers came close again after combining with João Pedro. Cole Palmer also came within inches of picking out Pedro.

Chelsea leave with no points, but also with evidence that they can compete in a demanding away match. Alonso’s side have flaws, and the possession numbers underline that they are still leaning heavily on the counterattack, yet this was not a collapse. It was a competitive defeat against a side that finished the stronger.
