Richard Hughes has left Liverpool after two and a half years as sporting director, closing a spell defined by heavy spending, mixed returns and growing frustration among supporters.

During his time on Merseyside, Hughes sanctioned close to $950 million in transfers and twice broke the club record, with this summer’s $166 million deal for Bradley Barcola sitting outside even that total. For many in the fanbase, the scale of the outlay and the lack of balance in recruitment have been central to Liverpool’s slide since the Premier League title in 2024-25.

There were, however, some clear positives. Hugo Ekitiké was the standout success from the major spending surge after Liverpool entered 2025 as champions. Signed for $104 million including add-ons, he made an immediate impact by scoring four minutes into the Community Shield and then netting in each of his first two Premier League appearances. He finished with 17 goals and six assists before rupturing his Achilles in April.

Jérémy Jacquet has also offered encouragement. The 21-year-old has adapted well despite limited minutes, and his mix of quickness, maturity, physical presence and technical quality suggests Liverpool may have spent well on his $82 million arrival.

Victor Muñoz is another early success. He has already helped Liverpool salvage late draws in both of their opening two matches under Iraola. The winger has shown he can operate on either flank, bringing pace, energy and work rate after Liverpool moved quickly to beat Newcastle United to a $45 million agreement.

The picture is far less convincing with Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong. Isak’s debut season produced only four goals in 22 appearances after a long transfer saga and a serious injury, even with Liverpool paying a club-record $170 million. Wirtz has offered only flashes of quality and managed 15 goal involvements in 52 games for a $156 million fee. Frimpong, meanwhile, has struggled badly in a flat back four after excelling as a right wingback for Leverkusen.

Milos Kerkez remains a more uncertain case. Hughes had previously signed him in his Bournemouth days, and Liverpool believed his attacking style made him a natural fit, but the verdict is still to come.
