The era of the nine-figure transfer is no longer exceptional in the Premier League. It has become part of the landscape, with clubs now paying not only for established stars but for what they might become. In the summer of 2026 alone, nine players either arrived in the division or moved internally for fees in that bracket, bringing the total number of $100 million-plus signings in competition history to 22.<\/p>\n
At the wrong end of the conversation sits Antony, whose move to Manchester United in 2022 remains the clearest warning sign of how badly a huge fee can distort expectations. Signed for $100.2 million (\u00a374 million) after two decent seasons with Ajax, he briefly started well before fading fast.<\/p>\n
Romelu Lukaku also failed to justify a massive outlay. Chelsea believed they were getting the striker who had rediscovered himself under Antonio Conte at Inter Milan, but the reunion with Thomas Tuchel collapsed quickly. Harry Maguire has turned a difficult start into a broadly successful Manchester United spell, while Jo\u0161ko Gvardiol has shown more than enough to support his place among the most expensive defenders ever. Mois\u00e9s Caicedo, despite a difficult debut and a few red cards, has grown into a central figure for Chelsea.<\/p>\n
Enzo Fern\u00e1ndez, Jack Grealish, Paul Pogba, Kai Havertz and Bradley Barcola all underline the same truth: a huge fee can buy potential, reputation or past achievement, but it cannot guarantee the same outcome.
