The Premier League’s clubs have again rewritten the spending record, with more than $4.7 billion invested across 155 new players. For all the movement, the mood around the division is mixed. Many supporters are still fixated on the deals that did not happen, while others are left waiting until January for another chance to reshape their squads.

What follows is a club-by-club look at the strongest starting lineups on paper after a summer window that changed plenty, but settled very little.

Arsenal came into the season as title favourites, and although they failed to land a star attacker, their back line remains strong. Bruno Guimarães is expected to thrive alongside Declan Rice, with Bukayo Saka carrying much of the burden down the right. Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyökeres are set to share centre-forward duties, while Christos Tzolis has made a bright start after replacing Leandro Trossard.

Aston Villa spent heavily despite posting the lowest net spend in the division. The exits of Emiliano Martínez, Ezri Konsa, Youri Tielemans, Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins leave Unai Emery with a side that will need time to settle, even with Johan Manzambi and Nicolas Jackson among the new arrivals.

Bournemouth, by contrast, appear satisfied with their work and kept key players such as Eli Junior Kroupi and Alex Scott. Brentford also look well equipped, with Keith Andrews benefiting from a squad that can compete for Europe if the early signs continue.

Brighton & Hove Albion once again cast their net widely, while Chelsea’s move for Emiliano Martínez underlines a desire to win now. Coventry City, Crystal Palace, Everton, Fulham and the promoted sides all carry their own uncertainties, while Leeds United, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest, Sunderland and Tottenham Hotspur each head into the campaign with very different questions to answer.

It remains a window of ambition, complication and unfinished business across the league.
