Manchester United have now filed their official first-team squad for the 2026/27 Premier League season following the close of the summer window, and the list has drawn attention for one notable omission.

Kobbie Mainoo is not included in the senior registration, but there is no hidden issue behind that decision. Because he was born after the start of 2005, he can be treated as an U-21 player this season. That means he does not need to be registered in the same way as the senior squad and remains fully available for Premier League selection.

Mainoo is not the only player in that category. Leny Yoro, who turns 21 in November, is also absent from the main squad for the same reason, and his absence does not alter his availability. The same applies to a number of other younger players who sit outside the registered senior list while still offering varying levels of first-team potential this season.

Among that wider U-21 group are Ayden Heaven, Tyler Fletcher, Shea Lacey, Harry Amass and summer signing Tynan Thompson. Supporters may also be hoping for a breakthrough from Paraguayan left back Diego León, while recent arrival Cristian Orozco, a midfielder from Colombia, is another name worth monitoring.

There are further familiar academy figures in the youth group. Kai Rooney, son of Old Trafford legend Wayne Rooney, is now an U-21 player for the first time after being accepted as a first-year scholar over the summer. Carrick’s son, Jacey, is also listed in that bracket. Several other players on the U-21 register were already involved in the early stages of preseason.

One player who does not even appear on the U-21 list is teenage forward JJ Gabriel. He is still only 15, has not yet reached the later stage of the academy, and has nevertheless featured in Premier League 2 over the past two weeks. Even so, he remains eligible to make his debut this season.
